Drivers are being warned against using unofficial websites to pay Clean Air Zone charges.
The advice comes after a number of motorists in the North East and elsewhere in the country paid a fee for driving in a Clean Air Zone, only to realise later that they did not have to pay or that the payment had not been registered, resulting in them receiving a Penalty Charge Notice.

Over £1.3m awarded as North East businesses invest in cleaner vehicles
More than £1.3m in grant funding for cleaner vehicles has been awarded to businesses and taxi drivers in the North East as part of Clean Air Zone measures.
In the first six months from the launch of the Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone, a total of £1,301,437 was successfully paid out, helping hundreds of owners to upgrade their vehicles to cleaner models.

Councils set out Clean Air Zone launch proposals
Proposals for a phased introduction of Newcastle and Gateshead’s Clean Air Zone are to be considered by councillors later this month.
The proposals would see the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) brought into operation later this year, with drivers of non-compliant vehicles entering the zone being sent warning letters, along with details about financial support, from November.
Subject to government approval, charges for non-compliant taxis, buses and HGVs would begin from 30 January 2023 and non-compliant vans would face charges to enter the CAZ from July 2023.

From Tuesday 21 June, the Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone has been added to the government’s online vehicle checker.
This means that you can now check whether your vehicle will be charged to enter the zone, which will cover most of Newcastle city centre as well as routes across the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges.
